First week...done!
Can you believe that three days flew by so fast? My head is still spinning! I've had such a fun week preparing for and then meeting your kiddos. I love the beginning of the year. We get to know each other, have fun, learn routines, and set guidelines that we can all live by for the next nine months together. My goal in fifth grade is to make our Portable a home away from home. Students are encouraged to stop by and work out problems, take a mindful minute, or rest and recharge as needed. I'm always around to help!
Our first large activity had us getting our hands (and the classroom floor) quite messy. I love it! A messy room means learning happened! Students were challenged to use completely random materials to build something that could be useful in today's society. In pairs, students had 45 minutes to plan and build their inventions, and three minutes to finalize and prepare to share their inventions. This is such a creative group!
- Abby K and Hudson created a really cool glitter drop that would be great for April Fools Day pranks.
- Parker and Clara created a working water filtration system.
- Reed and Jackson created a marble run "magic trick". (I guess they are ready for our Rube Goldberg PBL.)
- John and Bailey created a refrigerated supply drop for war-torn countries.
- Sydney and Chloe created a book page-turner with light (using my favorite book - The BFG).
- Lily and Finn B. created a robotic cat for people with allergies or who couldn't own real cats in their apartments.
- Nick and Emmy created a pencil dispenser. This could be extremely useful for us!
- Dean and Lachlan created a new hideaway for Shelton in case he got tired of his log.
- Finn P. and Marley created a unicorn trash can that turns trash into good-smelling gumdrops.
- Santi and Corri created two items! The first is an Eco-friendly refrigerator. The second is a solar powered oven with free (bonus!) oven mitt.
- Mackenzie and Isabelle made a phone shoe that seems like it would fit right in a James Bond movie.
- Charlie and Matteo, and Anna and Abigail also had awesome inventions.
Check pictures of these neat inventions below!
Our classroom looked like a Styrofoam explosion!
Stay tuned for more build pictures (after I get all photography permission forms back)!
Happy Friday!
